What delightful associations can emerge when you pronounce the word “Ukraine”? There could be: tasty cuisine, beautiful nature, the beauty of Ukrainian women. But there is one more special feature – the history. Yes, the very same history that makes everything more authentic, more romantic and sacred. Ukrainians are very proud of this fact.
But in our case history means not only fairy tales and legends. Ukraine is a real embodiment of the memory of its ancestors. Can you imagine the site where more than thousand years ago the great medieval state of Kievan Rus, had been established? Can you imagine a place, where you can feel the unspeakable spirit of the millennium, feel the spirit of ancient epics? Can you imagine a site where Yaroslavna (the princess from the medieval epic poem «The Tale of Igor’s Campaign«) was crying from the walls of a fortified castle – The Citadel – for her husband Prince Igor who went to the ill-fated raid against Polovtsians (Cumans) tribe? The most amazing fact is that The Citadel and the inner city with its timeless atmosphere have been preserved in modern times; the name of this sacred site is the Chernihiv region.
This area is amazingly beautiful in every season of the year. It is full of woods, rich of fauna, many crystal lakes, rivers, both small and huge. The main river of this region is called the Desna (this word means “a right hand”). Chernihiv is famous for its meadows, national parks and reserves. Also you can find here old churches, manors, palaces and remains of fortresses.
But the crown of this locality is Chernihiv City. It is a place where Past, Present and Future are closely connected. Fancy that, the city was first mentioned in chronicles in 907. But it is known, that the city is much older – approximately 1,300 years old.
The entrance of the city is worth looking at, for it is really amazing – for there upon the hill’s top rests St Catherine’s Church standing proudly on the mount. It is white and elegant as a swan with a beautiful lightening in the evening; it was built in the end of 17c. to the memory and courage of the Chernihiv Cossacks when they captured the Turkish fortress Azov in 1696.
It is a vivid example of the Cossack Baroque style (Ukrainian Baroque or Mazepa baroque) that emerged in Ukraine during the Hetmanate era, in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The most sacred site in Chernihiv is The Anthony Caves. This is a really mystical place, where you can see and feel ghosts’ presence. These Caves are located in the mountains. Yes, there are some real, albeit small mountains in Chernihiv; they are called Boldyny Hory or Boldin Hills. Bold is translated as an oak-tree from Old Slavonic. Here you can see one of the largest underground church in Europe – the Theodosius Totemskiy’s Church, its height is about 8.5 meters, length – 15,5 meters.
In the Caves you can see the monk’s cell, which was the room for treating «possessed» people, Ossuary – the repository of the remains of deceased monks, as well as the «lower floor» – dwellings of hermit monks, that later became an underground monastery cemetery.
The whole length of this monastery complex is around 350 meters. The Caves are arranged in several floors. The wonder is that it is not fully researched yet, specialists continue providing archeological research to the site to under cover more and more. .
Chernihiv also has a church with a “wishing stone” embedded in its wall behind the facade. So you should go to the Church of St. Paraskeva, touch the stone and make a wish. It will definitely come true, that was checked! Lastly if your soul cries for peace then why not to get in a car and to drive a few kilometers away to the historical town of Sedniv; believe me – you won’t regret it. Here there is fresh air, plenty of historical architectural monuments and the great Snov river, rich in iodine. The first soviet mystical horror movie “Viy” (“Evil”) was filmed in the local wooden church of XVIII c. Representative images are guaranteed!
